Surfing in Senegal: Cheap Holiday Deals for Sun, Sea and Surf
That great surfing dream of the Endless Summer isn’t something many of us can actually achieve, but with the help of

, we can get away for some sun, surf and sand.
Holiday surfing hot spots close to Europe tend to be as crowded in the surf as they are in the street – not quite the relaxing getaway with the board you were hoping for. So why not head somewhere where the usual surfing tourist crowds aren’t: Senegal. The weather is almost always hot, the surf is consistent and world-class and there are definitely enough good surfing spots to go round.

to Senegal and its famous capital, Dakar. (Yes, as in the end-point for the famous Paris-Dakar Rally) and the beaches are emptier than they are just a few hours further north in popular destinations like Morocco. Senegal has a lot to offer: It is a pretty safe country, it’s only a few hours from Europe and, here’s the best bit, it is actually one of the destinations featured in the classic 1966 surfing film, The Endless Summer.
In recent years Senegal has become more accessible and some surfers are taking the plunge and heading south to seek out spots like Ouakam and the famous right-hander at N’Gor Island. The largest swell along this stretch of coast is the Almadies Peninsula, not far from Dakar.
The best time of year to take advantage of
cheap holidays
to go surfing in Senegal is November to March, when the temperature is also pretty constant at a great 25C. At this time of year the swells being pushed down from the north and north-west are just fantastic and can range anywhere from two feet to ten feet, although it’s quite consistent. If you travel around July and August it is more likely to be three to five feet (but the temperatures are in the low thirties, so there is still plenty to recommend it).
The Scuba Diving and snorkeling around the local reefs are also exceptional, but if you fancy getting out on dry land for a bit, there is also plenty to do and see. The local landscape has a bit of everything – from tropical forests to savannah grasslands – with lots of wildlife to see, including elephants, monkeys and some stunning exotic birds. Senegal is actually a popular destination for birdwatchers.
And of course, the local culture is rich, too. You can check out markets in towns like Sandaga and Kermel and there is a really good restaurant and club scene, too. You also definitely don’t want to miss the enormous and genuinely bizarre African Renaissance Monument on top of one of Dakar’s hills.
Brush up on your French, as that’s the official language of Senegal – although there are also quite a few local languages that are also commonly spoken. Mostly everything is quite affordable but make sure you take all your gear with you because surf shops are still a bit hard to come by, as not many of the locals take advantage of the bountiful surf their coastline has to offer.
